Medicines optimisation domain

CPPE learning and assessment is linked to two quality criteria for this domain:

Consulting with people with mental health problems CPPE learning
Emergency contraception CPPE learning and e-assessment

Completing the learning and assessment detailed here does not mean that your pharmacy is entitled to a PQS payment for the Medicines optimisation domain. Contractors need to ensure that they meet all elements of this domain (as well as the gateway criterion) to be eligible to claim for the Medicines optimisation domain when they make their PQS declaration.

Consulting with people with mental health problems CPPE learning – to be completed by all pharmacists

This criterion supports the quality of New Medicine Service consultations following the expansion of the service. Completing the Consulting with people with mental health problems e-learning will help you to consider issues and priorities in consulting with people with mental health problems, including people living with depression. It will enable you to prepare for and approach these consultations in a way that ensures people living with mental health problems get the most benefit from them.

The quality criterion that relates to CPPE learning is:

By the end of 31 March 2026, all pharmacists working at the pharmacy on the day of the declaration, must have satisfactorily completed, within the last four years (between 1 April 2022 and end of 31 March 2026), the CPPE Consulting with people with mental health problems e-learning

Step 2: Certificate of study

After completing the e-learning programme, you can download a certificate of study from your learning record or via the tracker on the PQS homepage.

Contractors must keep a copy of the certificate for each member of staff as evidence that the e-learning has been completed.

Please note: There is no e-assessment specifically linked to the CPPE Consulting with people with mental health problems e-learning programme. Section 5 of the programme suggests that you check and demonstrate your learning by attempting the Consultation skills for pharmacy practice e-assessment, but this is not a requirement for meeting the PQS quality criterion.

Emergency contraception CPPE learning and e-assessment – to be completed by all pharmacists and any pharmacy technicians intending to provide the Pharmacy Contraception Service

This criterion supports the quality of Pharmacy Contraception Service consultations following the expansion of the service to include emergency contraception. Completing the Emergency contraception e-learning and e-assessment will enable you to conduct high-quality emergency contraception (EC) consultations, explain the options available for EC, and agree the best course of action with the individual.

The quality criterion that relates to CPPE learning and assessment is:

By the end of 31 March 2026, all pharmacists and any pharmacy technicians intending to provide the Pharmacy Contraception Service working at the pharmacy on the day of the declaration, must have satisfactorily completed, within the last three years (between 1 April 2023 and end of 31 March 2026), the CPPE Emergency contraception e-learning and passed the Emergency contraception e-assessment.

Step 2: e-assessment

Passing this e-assessment shows that you have met the learning outcomes for the CPPE Emergency contraception e-learning programme.

We recommend completing the e-learning before the e-assessment. You must complete the e-learning and pass the e-assessment to meet the PQS requirements.

After passing the e-assessment you can download a certificate of achievement from your learning record or, via the tracker on the PQS homepage.

Contractors must keep a copy of the certificate for each member of staff as evidence that the e-learning and e-assessment have been completed. This must be retained for three years for post-payment verification purposes.
