Alcohol misuse distance learning programme updated

We are pleased to announce the updated and rebranded Alcohol misuse: support and advice from the pharmacy team distance learning programme.

As a pharmacy professional, you are well placed to identify people who are drinking more than the recommended amounts and offer them advice on how to bring the amount of alcohol consumed down to safe levels.

The programme is intended for all pharmacy professionals to develop the knowledge and skills needed to provide an alcohol identification and brief advice service.

The focus is to look at the contribution the pharmacy team can make to alcohol harm reduction.

The learning programme equips you to be able to do the following:

  • describe the current extent and nature of problems relating to alcohol
  • discuss the national strategies to tackle alcohol misuse
  • identify the impact of alcohol misuse on mental and physical health, personal relationships and the wider society
  • describe the available screening tools that can be used to identify people who may be at risk as a result of their alcohol intake and use the tools to assess a patient’s alcohol use
  • describe the key techniques and approaches needed to offer brief advice in a pharmacy setting
  • identify people who require appropriate referral and discuss the requirements for setting up an alcohol identification and brief advice service.

The programme is designed to complement the Public Health England's Alcohol Identification and Brief Advice e-learning project which can be found here.
