Our clinical portfolio is expanding on a frequent basis, helping you to advance your knowledge and skills and deliver medicines optimisation in practice for all sectors of pharmacy. From two new focal points a year to our small group learning for hospital pharmacists – Optimise – this section focuses on clinical pharmacy, diseases and therapeutics.

Public health

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. As well as our public health workshops, use this section to access a wide range of resources to assure and maintain your competence, all underpinned by the Declaration of Competence system.

Case studies

Brendon Jiang

Brendon worked in community pharmacy for 12 years and worked up to the level of advanced practitioner. He was a Macmillan information pharmacist and was able to provide many kinds of clinical services before joining the pilot.

He now works as a clinical pharmacist across five different GP practices and focuses on medicines optimisation through face-to-face reviews.

Steve Williams

Steve has worked in both the hospital and university sectors over the last 25 years, but has now taken a senior clinical pharmacist post based at two GP practices in Dorset.

He has been an independent prescriber for ten years and his specialist interests include medication safety, diabetes and managing polypharmacy. His work mantra is simply that of Henry Ford’s: “Don't find fault, find a remedy; anybody can complain.”

Nicky O'Brien

Nicky has over 20 years’ experience, mainly in secondary care. She progressed to clinical pharmacy lead and led medicines management developments within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust.

For the past five years she has also provided prescribing support to a number of GP practices. In April 2016, she started working full time as a senior clinical pharmacist.

Shilpa Patel

Shilpa worked as a community pharmacist since 1999. She specialised in sexual health and helped improve contraceptive services across pharmacies in Brighton over the last ten years.

She recently became an independent prescriber, which lead on to a change in career path and she is now working as a practice pharmacist in an innovative GP practice which combines wellbeing services from therapists with NHS GP services. Her role is developing and she is very excited to be at the forefront of the changes to the pharmacy profession and the new opportunities now available to pharmacists.
