NHS priorities

Whether it’s to prepare for the next Pharmacy Quality Scheme deadline, or to increase your confidence in helping people with a learning disability, this section provides topic-specific pages that link to current NHS priorities. This section will support you in keeping your knowledge and skills up to date in order to provide high-quality pharmacy services and be service-ready.

Public health

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. As well as our public health workshops, use this section to access a wide range of resources to assure and maintain your competence, all underpinned by the Declaration of Competence system.

Extending the scope of your prescribing practice programme

Who is the programme for?

The Extending the scope of your prescribing practice programme is open to prescribing pharmacists who wish to develop their prescribing-related skills, knowledge and competence into other clinical areas using a structured approach.

Watch this short video where James Williams, a prescribing pharmacist working in community pharmacy, discusses how this programme can help you extend your scope of practice.

Programme aims

The aim of this programme is to support the development of your prescribing-related skills, knowledge and competence to extend your scope of prescribing practice.

The programme will give you the key principles to consider when extending your scope of prescribing practice. We will focus on using the activities of reflection, peer review, assurance of competence and prescribing governance to support your approach to the learning and development of new clinical skills and expertise. We will use the RPS Prescribing Competency Framework for all Prescribers throughout the programme.

Programme format

The programme is made up of the following components:

  • An online workshop
  • Pre-work in the form of a self-directed e-course

Learning outcomes

On completion of all aspects of this learning programme you should be able to:

  • reflect on your current scope of prescribing practice to identify existing areas of competence, and consider potential areas for expanding and developing your scope of practice
  • develop an action plan to extend your scope of prescribing within a defined clinical area of competence using the RPS Competency Framework for all Prescribers
  • create a portfolio of evidence under appropriate supervision to demonstrate competence within a defined area of prescribing
  • demonstrate the ability to work within appropriate governance arrangements related to your current and extended scope of prescribing practice
  • create a plan for monitoring and evaluating your performance in your extended scope of practice.

Who can apply?

Pharmacists who are already working as independent prescribers and are looking to extend their prescribing practice.
