Mental ill health affects 1 in 4 people throughout their lives. It is important to appreciate what it is like living with a mental health condition and the impact on the individual, family, friends or carers. In England,1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health condition such as depression or anxiety in any given week.
Read one of the following blogs from Sam or Amy about how living with depression affects their lives. Think about what their priorities are and how you might be able to support them.
http://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/depression/#.WOszNk3fNMs
Talk to a family member, friend or patient and ask them what it is like living with depression. Together identify one area of treatment or support you could tackle.
Finding the words: Taking the first step and reaching out for help is often the hardest step to take. How can we help support people to ask for help. Take a look at this video from MIND which shows some helpful strategies to approach a GP or other health care professional. https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/guides-to-support-and-services/seeking-help-for-a-mental-health-problem/where-to-start/#.WUeMA-srLIV
Discuss in your pharmacy teams how you can support people making that first step and record the date you had the conversation.
To find out more about different mental health conditions read one of the medicines optimisation briefings, produced in collaboration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society , our medicines optimisation briefings and articles support you in helping patients to get the best outcomes from their medicines:

Schizophrenia medicines optimisation briefing and article (2014)
By mid-October you should have received your CPPE learning cards on supporting people living with mental health conditions. Take this week to familiarise yourself with its content and see how you can utilise them in your area of practice. Mental health is a broad area, and it requires a wide range of skills to manage the challenges and support patients who live with mental health conditions. Identify where your knowledge gaps are so you can focus your learning over the next weeks of the campaign. There are further supporting resources on the mental health pages including activities and detailed case studies to explore your knowledge further.
Test your knowledge on mental health by completing this week’s e-challenge from the 25th October.
This week we are focusing on changing perceptions and sharing our good practice. Take a look at the CPPE learning card 4, physical and mental health which links you to the video on perceptions of physical and mental health are currently thought of differently.
After watching this video, write down how your perceptions of people living with mental health conditions have changed and what changes you can put into place in your sector of practice to ensure parity of esteem.
In addition to this, watch our CPPE animation on mental health, and think about how you can improve your person-centred care when consulting with people with mental health conditions:

Make a pledge on how you are going to change your practice following completion of the activities during this campaign.
We have some great ideas for things you can do and pledges you can make.
Your commitment will help show the impact that the pharmacy profession can make.
We are inviting you to share the resources you use in your place of work to help support people living with mental health conditions. These may be patient information leaflets, policies, guidelines, videos, training presentations, etc.
To share your good practice, visit the mental health resource hub We have put a couple of resources already there to get you started. Sharing your successes will help improve the efficiency of change across the profession to support people living with mental health conditions.
Challenge 5 is to make a pledge on how you are going to change your practice following completion of the activities during this campaign. Here we will show your pledges (latest 100 shown):

End of last year, I identified mental health support in the community as a key area for my businesses to better service in 2018. By July 2018, my community care team will be launching our mental health hub of 3 on-site clinics in a specific setting for psychotherapist, counselors, mental health nurses and mindfulness and group therapist. This is in addition the the launch of our digital platform for mental health therapy (cCBT etc) - online, 24/7 support, accessible and affordable. The pharmacy team will work closely with our community teams and our pharmacists (me included) are in process of further specialising our mental health pharmacy knowledge in order to better support our range of community mental health services.
