About The University of Manchester Medicines Use Review (MUR) and Prescription Intervention (PI) Assessment

The Assessment

This assessment has been developed against the Department of Health Competency Framework for the Assessment of Pharmacists providing the Medicines Use Review (MUR) and Prescription Intervention (PI) Service. The framework is not exhaustive but consists of the key elements that can be assessed in a robust and reliable manner.

This on-line assessment tests your individual knowledge, skills and behaviours in line with the Department of Health Competency Framework for the Assessment of Pharmacists providing the Medicines Use Review (MUR) and Prescription Intervention (PI) Service.

What are the PC requirements ?

You must have access to the internet.
You must have a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768 - higher than this is recommended. You should also ensure the zoom settting in your browser is set to 100% (use 'ctrl' and '0').
The MUR assessment works with most browsers.
You must have Microsoft Media Player installed (version 11 recommended) for the browser you are using. (If you are using any browser other than Internet Explorer you may need to install the Windows Media Plugin in order to be able to view the video in section 4.)

To maintain a secure site the IT programming in this assessment restricts the use of some of the normal Internet Explorer features. Pharmacists MUST ONLY USE the on screen buttons and controls (mouse operated) available throughout the assessment. Use of other keyboard functions or shortcuts can result in errors in the system, this can lead to failure of the section being undertaken with application of the 'lock-out' period

IMPORTANT NOTE: You must ensure that you have a reliable internet connection. Problems with internet connections can result in incomplete downloads of assessment information and/or questions or loss of connection to the website. In the event of a connection failure (including loss of power to your PC) or incomplete download when you are undertaking a section of the assessment this will result in failure of the section and application of the "lock-out" period.

How do I use 'MyCPPE' to access this assessment?

You will be asked to login before you attempt any section. For those familiar with the CPPE website the login uses your MyCPPE password. If you have not used the CPPE web site before you should choose 'receive your password' from the login page. Once you have received your password you can login at anytime. The login to MyCPPE facility also gives you access to a number of features personalised to you, including your CPD record with CPPE.

When and where should I do the assessment?

The assessment is only available on-line. There is no facility to complete this assessment off-line.
All answers must be completed and the assessment must be submitted on-line. There is no facility for printing, saving or copying any of the assessment data.

You will be informed immediately on completion of the assessment whether you have passed or failed the assessment.

The assessment is intended to be a true reflection of your individual abilities. Ideally, you should do it under 'examination conditions' i.e. in a quiet place where you are not likely to be interrupted and do the assessment on your own. This is particularly important because each section and the complete assessment must be completed within the set time.

Can I use reference texts?

Yes. You may want to refer to the BNF, the Directions (Drug Tariff V1C) or other reference texts of your choice. However, remember that you must complete each section within a set time

What is the format of the assessment?

  • There are four sections to the assessment

Use of patient data to complete a Department of Health MUR Document

  • Each section is timed and you must complete each section within a set time (see ' How long will it take me to complete this assessment' below)
  • Each section addresses key areas of the MUR process
  • There is an introduction to each section which explains the content and assessment process within that section. If you are unfamiliar with on-line assessment the introduction provides examples of the IT mechanisms you need to be able to use in that section.
  • You must do each section sequentially and you must pass each section before you can move onto the next one.

Important note: Please make sure that you read all the information about this assessment before attempting to answer any of the questions

How long will it take me to complete this assessment?

This is an assessment completed against the clock. Each section must be completed within the time specified below. Each section has a timer at the top of the screen.

The full assessment can take no longer than 180 minutes if you pass each section, without failure, continue straight onto the next section and do not choose to take any time out.

However, you may decide to do one section, or more, at a time over a longer period to meet your own personal circumstances. This is acceptable, provided you complete the full assessment within the maximum time period.

You will have a maximum period of 49 days to complete the full assessment. After this period you must restart the assessment from the beginning.
Each of the sections is timed as shown in the table below:

NOTE ABOUT ON SCREEN TIMER:
The on screen timer is only an indication of time remaining. The absolute time you have taken on each section is recorded accurately by our server. A number of local issues can cause discrepancies in the timer reading (including local internet connection speed; download speed of your PC and the accuracy of your PC clock) CPPE cannot control these discrepancies. These are just some of the potential limitations of using an on-line format. To limit any problems you may want to make a personal record of time rather than simply rely on the on screen timer

Timing-out messages.

For security reasons, once you are logged in with your RPSGB number, should you be inactive in your browser for a period of 20 minutes you will automatically be logged out. (Activity is defined as clicking a grey coloured 'NEXT' button.) If you were in the process of completing a section assessment, then you will receive a message telling you that you have been timed out due to inactivity, that you have failed the section and that you must wait until after the 'lock out' period to restart the section. ( for further information about the 'lock-out' period see 'What happens if I fail one of the sections' below) . Otherwise you will be given the opportunity to login once more.

Can I find out as I complete each section how I am doing?

Yes. After you complete each section you will be told whether you have passed or failed.
You can also review whether or not you have passed a section by checking the 'My Results' section. You can access this from the main menu

What happens if I fail one of the sections?

If you fail one of the sections you will receive a message at the end of the section telling you this.
You must then wait 6 days before you can re-take the section and continue with the assessment. This is the 'lock-out' period.
This 'lock-out' period will give you an opportunity to reflect on your learning needs and undertake any appropriate self-directed learning.
You can fail each section up to 2 times and still have the opportunity, after the' lock-out' period, to start the assessment from the section you failed.

If you fail any section 3 times, after the' lock-out' period you will have to re-start the assessment from the beginning at section one.

Some of the questions have been classed as 'significant'. The knowledge being assessed in these questions is considered to be critical. If you answer a significant question incorrectly you will automatically fail a section. You will not be told which of the questions in the assessment are 'significant' but you will be told at the end of the section that you answered a 'significant' question incorrectly.

When will I find out whether I have passed or failed the assessment ?

You will be informed at the end of the assessment whether you have passed or failed.
You must pass all sections, sequentially, to pass the complete assessment.

What learning do I need to undertake the assessment and how do I access the relevant learning?

There is no specific learning programme to support this MUR assessment. You may find some of the CPPE learning programmes will support your individual needs, take a look at the programmes listed in the prospectus or on the website www.cppe.ac.uk. There are other providers of MUR learning support and you may find it helpful to review some of these before you take this assessment.

I do not want to do an on-line assessment, what other options do I have?

Various Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) now offer MUR assessments. Each of them have their own individual style of assessment, you will need to review each of them to decide which is best for you.
(further information can be found on the PSNC website www.psnc.org.uk )

Do I need to do anything other than the on-line assessment?

When you successfully complete this assessment you will receive a MUR certificate. You must send a copy of the MUR certificate to your Primary Care Trust before delivering the service.

It is advisable to continue to use your CPD to demonstrate on-going evidence of developments of your experience and learning related to the MUR and Prescription Intervention Service
