Completing the learning, assessment and training as detailed here, does not mean that your pharmacy is entitled to a PQS payment for the Respiratory domain. Contractors need to ensure that they meet all elements of this domain, as well as the gateway criteria, to be eligible to claim for the Respiratory domain when they make their PQS declaration.

Inhaler technique – all pharmacists

Correct inhaler technique can help people with respiratory diseases to have better outcomes. Anyone who consults with people who use inhalers should have a clear understanding of inhaler technique.

The element of the Inhaler technique checks quality criterion that relates to CPPE learning and assessment is:

By the end of 31 March 2023, all pharmacists working at the pharmacy on the day of the declaration, who are providing NMS, with the appropriate inhaler technique check, must have satisfactorily completed, within the last four years (between 1 April 2019 and end of 31 March 2023), the CPPE Inhaler technique for health professionals: getting it right e-learning or attended a CPPE face-to-face inhaler technique workshop and passed the current version of the Inhaler technique for health professionals e-assessment updated on 15 April 2020. Please note that the version of the CPPE Inhaler technique e-assessment available prior to 15 April 2020, does not meet the requirements.

The e-assessment must be completed if you have completed the e-learning or attended the face-to-face workshop before providing inhaler technique checks. Please note that the version of the CPPE e-assessment prior to 15 April 2020, Inhaler technique, does not meet the requirements.

To complete the CPPE learning as part of this element of the criterion, you need to take the following steps:

Step 1 - e-learning or workshop

If you have not attended a CPPE face-to-face Optimising inhaler technique: improving outcomes workshop or completed the CPPE Inhaler technique for health professionals: getting it right e-learning since 1 April 2019 then you have two options:

Either complete the following e-learning.

Or attend a CPPE face-to-face inhaler technique workshop.

Step 2 - e-assessment

To meet the requirements for this criterion, you must pass the CPPE Inhaler technique for health professionals e-assessment, released on 15 April 2020. The previous version of the e-assessment, Inhaler technique, does not meet the requirements. Passing this e-assessment shows that you have met the learning outcomes for the CPPE Optimising inhaler technique: improving outcomes workshop or the CPPE Inhaler technique for healthcare professionals: getting it right e-learning programme.

As with all assessments, we recommend that if you have not previously attended a CPPE Optimising inhaler technique: improving outcomes workshop or completed the e-learning, you complete the programme before trying the assessment. (You must complete the e-learning/attend a workshop and pass the e-assessment to meet the requirements for PQS.)

When you have passed the e-assessment you will be able to download a certificate of achievement from your learning record, or via the tracker on the PQS home page (click on the ‘Home’ button at the top of this page ).
