NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service - Tier 2 pilot

PCS - advanced Tier 2 - pilot

The purpose of this Tier 2 pilot is to test a model for community pharmacy teams to initiate the provision of oral contraception supplies, building on the Tier 1 service. A pharmacy must complete 10 Tier 1 level consultations before being able to register to provide the Tier 2 service, so it is assumed that pharmacists providing the Tier 2 service will have completed all of the core mandatory learning required for Tier 1.

The pilot will implement and test an integrated pathway between existing services and community pharmacies to allow people greater choice and access when considering oral contraception. It aims to create additional capacity for primary care and sexual health clinics.

For a more detailed description of the aims and background to the service, please refer to the Tier 1 service specification.

Objectives specific to Tier 2 building upon Tier 1:

  1. To test a model for community pharmacy teams to initiate the provision of oral contraception supplies.
  2. To evaluate the Tier 2 service model, encompassing quantitative and qualitative measures, including service user experience, the experience of pharmacy staff and primary care and sexual health professionals and the safety of the service in community pharmacy.
  3. To inform the scope and service model design for a Tier 3 service, that would enable a community pharmacy to manage the ongoing supply and administration of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs), excluding intrauterine devices (IUDs) and intrauterine systems (IUSs).

On this page, you will find a collection of resources to support you in your preparation for delivering this Tier 2 service. We recommend that you start by familiarising yourself with the service specification, which can be found under the first tab below, before working through the core mandatory learning.
