Public health

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. As well as our public health workshops, use this section to access a wide range of resources to assure and maintain your competence, all underpinned by the Declaration of Competence system.

The aim of this guide is to help pharmacy teams work together to undertake effective, high quality MURs. It will help you explore ways of targeting those patients who will benefit most from MURs, identify key medicines usage issues for each of the target groups and use these to improve the quality of the MURs you undertake.

Learning objectives

On completion of all aspects of this learning programme you should be able to:

  • identify and prioritise those patients in the national target groups who would benefit most from MURs
  • develop successful strategies for communicating with patients about high risk medicines
  • identify interventions that can improve medicines management for patients with respiratory disease
  • describe local arrangements for communication of post-discharge information from hospital to the community
  • implement improvements in the care of patients in the national target groups by undertaking high quality MURs
  • demonstrate that your MURs provide value for money.
