The aim of this course is to build the confidence and competence of pharmacy professionals who are starting to work in community practice for the first time. This includes pharmacy professionals that have just qualified and those moving to community pharmacy practice for the first time from another sector.
To help you reflect on your confidence and competence, you will work through the Preparing for community pharmacy self-assessment framework. Completing the self-assessment framework at the start of the programme helps you identify the key topics you need to learn more about to develop your knowledge and skills in preparation for starting practice.
This learning programme has been developed in collaboration with Health Education England.
Learning outcomes
Once you have identified your own personal learning needs, through the completion of the self-assessment framework, the different topic areas in this programme will support you to:
- use your professional judgment to balance individuals’ needs with legislative or professional requirements of your role
- describe the importance of patient safety and know how to apply policies and procedures to support this in community pharmacy practice
- supply, store and dispose of controlled drugs in accordance with legal and professional requirements
- discuss the digital technology, pharmacy systems and data protection regulations that you will be required to use to support patient care in community pharmacy practice
- deliver the pharmacy services required in the pharmacy or pharmacies where you work to meet community pharmacy contractual requirements and support patient-care
- conduct person-centred consultations using key skills, models and techniques
- address barriers to communicating effectively with your team and the wider healthcare team
- describe how you and your team can work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to improve patient care across different sectors
- identify gaps in your clinical knowledge and know where to locate appropriate resources to address them
- recognise the support available to you in the workplace and the opportunities available for future career progression.
How to use this programme
We run our e-courses online in Canvas. After booking, if you have not used Canvas before you will be registered by CPPE and informed of your login details. This e-course is self-directed. This means that you can work through the course at a time and pace that suits you. In Canvas there will be a menu on the left for navigating through each area, so that you can access each unit and its content separately.
