Clinical pharmacy

Our clinical portfolio is expanding on a frequent basis, helping you to advance your knowledge and skills and deliver medicines optimisation in practice for all sectors of pharmacy. From two new focal points a year to our small group learning for hospital pharmacists – Optimise – this section focuses on clinical pharmacy, diseases and therapeutics.

Public health

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. As well as our public health workshops, use this section to access a wide range of resources to assure and maintain your competence, all underpinned by the Declaration of Competence system.

Advanced clinical assessment skills: Primary care pathways

This event is only for pharmacists who are taking part in one of the primary care extended education pathways.

It is particularly recommended for pharmacists who are undertaking assessment of acute presentations and minor illnesses in general practice.

The aim of this workshop is to introduce experienced primary care pharmacy professionals to the knowledge and skills necessary to undertake initial examinations and relevant clinical histories in patients with abdominal, ear, nose and throat symptoms in the primary care setting.

Designed and led by experienced GPs, the workshop will include case studies and scenarios to apply learning to practice. Participants will be expected to undertake examination on medical actors during the study day.

Learning outcomes

On completion of all aspects of this learning programme you should be able to:

  • apply a person-centred approach to gastrointestinal and ear, nose and throat (ENT) history-taking
  • describe the abdominal examination
  • describe ear, nose and throat examinations
  • describe the significance of gastrointestinal and ENT red flags
  • identify when it is appropriate to refer patients on to the relevant member of the multidisciplinary team.
