The Francis Inquiry was published in 2013 and examined the failings in one particular healthcare trust, but highlighted system failures across the whole NHS. This report made a number of recommendations such as increased openness, transparency and candour throughout the healthcare system, improved support for compassionate care and stronger leadership. This programme will allow you to develop your leadership skills with particular reference to these recommendations.

Learning objectives

On completion of all aspects of this learning programme you should be able to:

  • list the 6Cs and discuss how you demonstrate these at work
  • describe your responsibilities in relation to the statutory duty of candour
  • discuss how leadership and culture within your organisation or department impact on candour, openness and transparency
  • discuss the barriers to speaking up and raising concerns.
