From two new focal points a year to our small group learning for hospital pharmacists – Optimise – this section focuses on clinical pharmacy, diseases and therapeutics.

Public health

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. This programme will help you to build your knowledge of the management of people with depression, and better understand the condition, its impact and approaches used to manage it.

Learning objectives

On completion of all aspects of this learning programme you should be able to:

  • describe the symptoms of depression and the basis for the diagnosis of the various severities of depression
  • describe the evidence-based pharmacological and psychological recommendations for the management of depression
  • demonstrate an understanding of the impact depression has on patients and those around them
  • describe the risks and benefits of antidepressant treatment, in order to support patients in optimising the use of their medicines
  • describe where to signpost people with depression for further advice and support
  • apply a whole pharmacy team approach to supporting healthy lifestyle messages for people living with depression
  • discuss the condition, choice of medication, duration and withdrawal of treatment with patients.
