CPPE and NHS England (NHSE) have worked together to deliver the Newly qualified pharmacist programme.
This 12-month programme is fully funded by NHSE as part of their Newly Qualified Pharmacist pathway, which aims to link the initial education and training reforms to a continuum of development into post-registration. The pathway is intended to help you to make the transition to more independent learning and acts as a steppingstone towards enhanced and advanced practice.
Newly qualified pharmacists have described 'lack of confidence', 'decision making', 'managing professional relationships', 'being in charge', and 'adapting to the workplace' as the greatest challenges they face. The overall aim of the Newly qualified pharmacist programme is to support you to develop and demonstrate confidence and competence in core areas of pharmacy practice. The programme is designed to help you to become better equipped to adapt and deliver safe and effective patient care at this pivotal stage of your career.
The programme is for pharmacists employed or locuming in community pharmacy (except Boots), primary care (integrated care boards (ICBs), care homes or GP practice), or health and justice, who have registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) since 2021. Pharmacists who registered before 2021 who are returning from a career break are also eligible to apply.
The Newly qualified pharmacist programme will be the first step in your post-registration professional development journey and will provide you with comprehensive learning to support your progression towards independent prescriber (IP) training. The programme is mapped to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Post-registration Foundation Pharmacist Curriculum learning outcomes, and has been designed to develop prescribing competence, with a module specifically designed to support newly qualified pharmacists prepare to train as an independent prescriber. The experience and awareness gained from the Newly qualified pharmacist programme will act as a springboard towards IP training.
Applications for the Newly qualified pharmacist programme have reopened and will close on Monday, 30 October 2023. The programme will begin on Monday, 6 November 2023.
