Hot topics to tackle

The transformative nature of technology has been a significant topic in the pharmacy profession. We’ve seen the impact digitisation has had throughout COVID-19. More recently, a report on the government’s pharmacy policy commitments has identified a need to improve technology in the sector, prompting further discussion on what needs to be done now and the possibilities that lie ahead.

In February, NHS England reported that just under a billion prescription items were dispensed electronically in the 2021-22 financial year, resulting in an array of benefits for pharmacy professionals, patients and the environment. While incredible progress has been made, the government has stated the target to eliminate paper prescribing by 2024 has been pushed back to 2025, as the recovery from COVID-19 continues.

In other tech-innovation news, digital tools are being utilised to detect undiagnosed hypertension, with Community Pharmacy Surrey and Sussex working with NHS Sussex to develop a pathway that will maximise the use of this service. As the trend of AI also intensifies, advanced AI methods are being used to personalise patient care at the bedside.
