Men's health open learning programme launched for Men's Health Week

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new Men's health open learning programme to coincide with Men's Health Week 2010 (14-20 June) – the first-ever national campaign to encourage men to become more physically active.

CPPE and the Men's Health Forum (www.menshealthforum.org.uk), organisers of Men's Health Week 2010, worked together during the design and development of the Men's health programme, which is aimed at pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in community practice (Section 1) and those in all sectors of practice (Section 2).

"Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can use CPPE's new Men's health module to support their continuing professional development and develop a plan for practice to improve accessibility for men," comments Matthew Shaw, CPPE deputy director and author of the programme. "Our open learning programme gives learners an opportunity to engage in new learning during a time of increased awareness about men's health issues."

Dr Ian Banks, President of the Men's Health Forum, comments: "Just doing a small amount of physical activity can greatly improve a man's quality of life. Whether it's walking more regularly, cycling to work or even just using stairs not the lift, there are things we can all do as part of our daily routine.”

The Men's health open learning programme considers those conditions which only occur, or are more likely to occur, in men. It encourages pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to consider the extent to which men use their services and what steps they could take to improve this. Learners who undertake the activities in this module will develop a sound understanding of a wide range of conditions and be able to apply this to the age group of men who they have encouraged to use their practice.

The programme also includes an accompanying web-based factfile to support learners as they work through Section 2 of the programme. Learners can add to this factfile as they consider different issues, and thereby build up a useful resource for the future.
