Overview: This unit provides key information about repeat dispensing and the practical implications of implementing the service. It includes a number of useful templates that are available to download. If your learning community is multi-disciplinary, Booklet 2 provides activities which involve both pharmacy and GP practice teams.

The unit considers:

- the rules and regulations governing repeat dispensing
- the practical implications of implementing a repeat dispensing service
- how to provide a safe, efficient and expandable repeat dispensing service to patients and local prescribers.

Learning objectives: On completion of all aspects of this programme you should be able to:

  • describe how the NHS repeat dispensing arrangements in England operate

  • identify the key service requirements of repeat dispensing

  • explain repeat dispensing (and its benefits) to a patient and assess if the service is suitable for them

  • implement a safe and efficient repeat dispensing service

  • write a standard operating procedure (SOP) for dispensing that adequately covers repeat dispensing

  • list the benefits, processes and potential issues associated with repeat dispensing from a prescriber, practice staff and pharmacy perspective.

Learning intended for:
  • pharmacists
  • pharmacy technicians
  • pre-registration pharmacist trainees
