e-assessment FAQs

E-assessment frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What style of assessment does CPPE use?

All our assessments are online. We offer three different approaches within our e-assessments:

As we generate new questions, we are developing a databank which allows us the opportunity to build an element of randomisation. This means that two people undertaking the same assessment won’t necessarily get the same questions.

A learner undertaking an assessment should try to provide as much information in their answers as possible - including what they have done and what reference sources they have used. We use this information to give feedback and support to learners.

Why does CPPE use this type of assessment approach?

This type of assessment has been shown to give a good indicator of the ability of the learner. Learners and commissioners will find our e-assessments robust and reliable in their format and structure.

How long does the assessment take to complete?

Each assessment is divided into sections. We have fixed the total time available for each section at 45 minutes. As most of these questions are linked to situations which you will probably need to address in your daily practice, we do not think that it should take you longer than 45 minutes.

How can I find out whether an assessment is appropriate for me?

All the e-assessments in our portfolio identify the audience and purpose of the assessment. Before you start the assessment, read the information under the section ‘About this assessment’.

Can my local commissioner/PCT have access to my assessment record?

Yes. You can use the CPPE viewer to allow other people to review your assessment record. You can choose which assessments you would like to be viewable from your my CPPE record page on our website.

Do you provide feedback after I have completed the assessment?

Yes. We provide advice if you have failed a section. The advice covers both the questions you have answered correctly, as well as those you have not answered correctly. We will also tell you how long you took to complete the section, and whether this may have contributed to you not passing if you did not take enough time to complete it effectively.

What is the pass mark?

The pass mark for our assessments is around 80 percent, depending on the particular assessment.

I keep on failing. What do I need to do to pass next time?

Before starting an e-assessment we ask you why you have chosen to work through this particular assessment and what you have done to prepare for it. You may need to go back and read the information we gave you about the assessment, and ensure you have access to the resources that are recommended for you to be fully prepared before starting the assessment.

You can use the feedback that we provide, on sections that you fail, to improve your knowledge before attempting the assessment again. We will ask you what you have done to improve your knowledge when you go back into the assessment for another attempt.

Make sure you spend enough time on each question. There are 45 minutes available for each section.

I have failed and cannot get back into the assessment. When can I do it again?

We have a lockout period to allow you to review our feedback and improve your knowledge where needed. The lockout period is 20 hours for all assessments, except for the MUR assessment, which is six days.

Why is MUR different from other e-assessments?

It has been developed in collaboration with the University of Manchester and is accredited by the university. It is designed for pharmacists wishing to provide a Medicines Use Review (MUR) and Prescription Intervention Service.

The lockout period is six days and you must pass all sections within a 49-day period. A printed certificate will be sent to you on successful completion of the assessment.

The MUR assessment is a standalone assessment which is not directly supported by any CPPE learning programmes.
